No, neither the Happy Cards nor the Youth Activity Interest Cards are assessment tools. They are conversation tools and can be used flexibly - however works best for you. The cards are designed to help find out the types of activities a child likes to do.
Just as important as knowing what makes you happy, is knowing what you do not enjoy. The Happy Cards can be used for that too, and give children a voice in expressing their likes and dislikes.
They are designed to be used with children aged between 5-10 years and the photos generally depict children in this broad age group. However, they have been successfully used with younger children with extra support.
Rules of Play can be used with any card or board game. They are especially useful when playing a game such as Uno when there can be different interpretations of the rules.
Before playing a round with young children, I usually go through the Rules of Play with them, discuss if we are going to use the “Pick up, put down” rule or not, and if we are, then place that card face up as a reminder that this rule is allowed. Another contentious rule can be whether a wild card is allowed to be placed on top of a wild card. If this is made clear at the beginning, most children are able to accept it.
If some children often have difficulty coping with losing or tend to crow about winning, I go through the cards related to that e.g. “Someone is always going to win. Someone is always going to lose. Both need to be kind.” Or simply “No insults.”
Some children respond better to the warning card (plain yellow) or the red card (time out).
Some children love being creative and this is an opportunity to make up your own rules!
Or replace one if it is lost or destroyed.
Inspired by sport, and universally recognised, the yellow card and red card can act as very simple and wordless reminders about playing by the rules.
Tired of being the referee? "Rules of Play" is an add-on to any card or board game and helps children aged 4-99 understand the social expectations before the game begins. Perfect for playing with siblings, the cards can also be used to make the game easier or harder, depending on individual needs. See store for details.
The Happy Cards are now available! Each pack has 47 photo cards designed to help children between 5-10 years express what they like to do. See store for details.
Three Striped Cats is an online store selling resources for occupational therapists, allied health assistants, teachers and support workers. All products have been developed by an occupational therapist and are designed to support those who work with children and young people.
The Youth Activity Interest Cards were developed by Ann Kennedy-Behr, an occupational therapist working with children and young people. Ann found that while there were many resources and tools for children, there were few to support clinical practice with adolescents. Knowing that pursuing leisure interests can be motivating, Ann looked for an interest checklist that would suit their needs. It needed to be appropriate for people with and without reading skills. Finding nothing on the market, Ann set out to develop her own, and so the Youth Activity Interest Cards were born.
Trialled and tested with young people ranging in age from 12-25, the cards with photos of young people engaging in leisure interests and activities are a great way of starting a conversation and developing rapport.
Ann has been an occupational therapist for almost 30 years. She has worked all over the world including the USA, England, Germany, Austria and of course Australia. After 10 years in an academic role, Ann has returned to full-time work as a clinician, enjoying working with children, young people and their families to achieve their goals.
